A very good question! It depends on your orthodontist, and also on how your teeth were to begin with. The clear plastic ones are good because they are not as noticeable as the other ones, but break down easier. The hawley retainer with the wire in front lasts longer, but is less esthetic. I like the clear ones because no one can see them, but I think they break easier.
