If the expander is fitting well around the baby tooth and the tooth is not mobile, it should be ok. Some orthodontists routinely use expanders on the baby molars, especially on children less than 7 years old.

my 6 yr old daughter just had her expander installed. They had trouble getting the band around the left adult molar and put it on the tooth just forward instead. As a result the expander is at an angle. Will she still have the desired result of a wider upper palate?

Headgear is used for correcting overbites. It hooks on to the upper molars, and has an outer bow that comes out of the mouth and sits right next to the cheeks on both sides. The bow connects to a strap that fits around the head or neck.

Headgear works by putting a backwards force on the upper jaw and teeth, holding them or pushing them back while the lower jaw grows, thus improving the overbite.

Hmm, I think you should go back to you dentist to settle this things. I'm sure he'll know what to do.. It's quite important I guess. Why, would your dentist bother to put that wire if its not important? Dental hygiene is really an essential part of life. We should not take it for granted.

I can't tell for sure exactly what the wire is for. Sometimes they put wires in after the braces to hold the teeth in place. If the wire was acting as a retainer, you should go back and have it put back in.

Im no where near the early stages, in fact i could be considered done. I've gotten my braces off and they put wires in the back. One of them is broken, and by broken i mean completely gone. I think my next appointment is either in 2 years or never. So, i was just wondering if that wire is important and should i go in and get another one put it, or just leave it go.
Thanks

Sometimes, during the beginning stages of treatment when light wires are used, the wire can break. If it is poking at you, you can put wax on it to make it feel better, until you can go see your orthodontist. If the wire isn't bothering you, then it depends on whether or not your teeth back where the wire broke are straight yet. If you are in the beginning stages of treatment, and your wire broke by the back teeth which are straight already, then you're probably ok waiting until your next appointment to get it fixed. If your teeth are still crooked back where the wire broke, that means your orthodontist was still trying to actively straighten your teeth, and you should probably go see your orthodontist to get it fixed.

A very good question! It depends on your orthodontist, and also on how your teeth were to begin with. The clear plastic ones are good because they are not as noticeable as the other ones, but break down easier. The hawley retainer with the wire in front lasts longer, but is less esthetic. Please see this article for more about orthodontic retainers.

Damon Braces are a name for a specific brand of braces. Damon braces are self-ligating braces which means that they can clip onto the archwires themselves without the need of any metal or colored ties. There are other brands of self-ligating braces, not just Damon such as In-ovation R, Speed, and Smart-clip braces.

I'm sorry to hear about your decay. The decay in your mouth should not have anything to do with you getting your braces off faster, though. If anything, taking the braces off sooner was probably better or else you may have had more decay. What you can do now is just brush and floss really well to prevent future decay. You can try rinsing with a fluoride mouthrinse such as ACT which you can get at your local drugstore. It helps to make your teeth stronger.

My braces we tightened quicker because I wanted them off for my wedding. Instead of it taking 14 month it took 7 months. Ever since my braces have been taken off, my teeth are decaying so FAST! I need so much work done to my mouth. I have 4 holes in four different teeth! And a cavity inside of my front tooth as well. I need 2 crowns. I just do not understand. I have never had problems like this before! I brush and floss the same as I always have. I brush twice a day. More when I had braces of course. I am 24 years old and my teeth are falling out of my mouth. Whats the deal???

Great question Amy! A lot of people want to get their braces off faster so they ask their orthodontist to put more pressure on their teeth, thinking their teeth will move faster.

The fact is that teeth do need a certain amount of force to move. However, putting more than the optimal force on the teeth may start damaging your teeth or surrounding bone or gum tissues. You can speak with your orthodontist about possibly speeding up treatment. Sometimes he/she may be able to speed things up, but other times he/she may say that more pressure may just be counterproductive.

To answer your question about getting more decay by increasing the "tightening," decay is cause by not brushing/flossing your teeth well, not "tightening." However, putting excessive pressure on your teeth can lead to your roots shortening faster. Hope this helps!

Is there side effects of getting your braces tightened faster than the time it normally takes? Can getting your braces off faster by getting them tightened faster make your teeth decay?

It depends on how bad your overbite is. Braces can improve and correct most mild to moderate overbites. However, if your overbite is really bad, then you may need braces along with a jaw surgery procedure to move your lower jaw forward, or your upper jaw back, or both.

To correct overbites, your orthodontist may have you wear elastics (rubber bands), headgear, or other appliance that helps your lower jaw and/or teeth move forward.

Sometimes when you eat something, it can cause your wire to shift so it starts hurting your cheeks. You can use orthodontic wax and put it over the poky end of the wire until you can go see you orthodontist to have the wire either shifted back or clipped.
